LYMM RL 20 WIDNES SAINTS 10 - 15/08/09
After
a wintery and wet start to the day, Crouchley Lane brightened up considerably
for a blustery but fine game of rugby league between the two top sides
in the North West Premiership to contest the Grand Final.
As in
the previous meeting between these two clubs, the match was hard fought
with aggressive and skilful rugby played by both sides in a competitive
and sporting manner.
Lymm's
Mick Cadd opened the scoring after surging through in the sixth minute
of the match to touch down in the corner. Unfortunately due to the swirling
wind Pete Leonard was unable to add the extras.
Tom Mahoney
added the first of his two tries on the 30 minute mark and followed
this up with his second, ten minutes later.
Mark Birmingham
intervened the brace with a score for Widnes which went unconverted
to leave Lymm in the driving seat at the break.
A second
half try for Widnes from Kevin Gamble converted by Stuart Harland gave
the visitors hope but a further converted try from Paul Flannery saw
Lymm run out the winners and claim the shield.
The North
West Championship trophy was presented to Lymm Captain Pete Cannon by
RFL Regional Development Officer Matt Birkett.
Lymm now
go on to play Kippax, the Champions of Yorkshire, in the National quarter
final this weekend.
